A Girl Can Dream

I wish for an embroidery machine. You know... to fuel my craft addiction even more.

I was waiting for the Consumer Reports sewing and embroidery machine study to be published this month before I made any decisions. And wouldn't you know it, the highest rated dual machine is Swiss. Those Swiss are mechanical or something, they are amazing. Any-who, the Bernina (that's the brand) is sold at a sweet little fabric shop on the other side of Fayetteville. So Lil and I took a trip out today.

Only to find that the lovely Bernina comes with a lovely crazy impressive price tag! A starter machine, which is upgradable to embroidering status and the software to be able to make any graphic into an embroidery would run me about $4800!

You cannot see the disappointment on my face... but it is there.

I guess I'll go on wishing.

On the Needles

Are you knitting?

I am; slowly, but surely. This is a little bitty sweater. I'm half-way through one sleeve, and need one more.

And that's all I can say about that.

Ash Wednesday

Did you party it up last night for Mardi Gras?

I am a bad catholic today, my fasting is a no go. I tried. I really did. But what with the nursing and the running around being an FRG leader and the nasty headache (please don't laugh at me Linda, I'm a headache WUS!), I gave in at about 1:00pm and decided I needed a proper lunch. And I can tell you right now... I'm going to have a proper dinner too.

Lil and I did go to mass today for ashes. I can't recall even paying attention to the kids in mass on Ash Wednesday before. Have they always given infants and toddlers ashes?

Crafty, Cont.

Lily got another cute smock. This time in stripes and denim.

A new summer dress inspired by miniBoden. I just love the little birds!

And a birthday present for a friend whom we cannot name, since we haven't been to her party yet!

Nasturtium

It's just shy of an inch across, but the nasturtium seeds I planted on the 13th have sprouted and are growing like weeds. Pardon the pun. ;) My basil and cilantro are sprouted and growing too, but their leaves are only the size of lentils, not nearly as impressive and the growth of the nasturtium.

Did you know that the nasturtium is edible? It's related to watercress.

I love the veining... so beautiful.

Tax Walk

Here we are, waiting in the Fort Bragg Tax Office on Saturday morning. Lil decided to make the best of her time there to practice her walking skills. It won't be too long before she doesn't need the "walker."

Getting Crafty Again

I got the hankering to make Lil some new duds.

And I love the idea of a child's smock. Nice and simple; can be worn over a shirt and jeans or just over a diaper in the summer. :)

I could not, however, find a pattern that I liked! So what did I do? I made one up.... It's not quite perfect yet, I want to make the neck hole a bit bigger, and give her a little more room under the arms. Oh, and I made it reversible!

This then is the end result:

Girl Scout Cookies!

It's Girl Scout Cookie season! I think I only bought eight boxes so far. ;) But who's counting?

I'm loving the new Daisy Go Rounds, they're a lovely little cinnamon cookie that I can share with Lily. And of course the Peanut Butter Patties and the Caramel deLites. (weren't those once called samoas?) I also very much enjoy the Lemonades! But my favorite, without a doubt, is the Thin Mint. We buy extra boxes of them and stash them in the freezer, cause you know, those Girl Scouts eventually stop selling the goodness. :(

I think the Thin Mints are Lily's favorite too:

Anthill

Do you hate ants?

Most of us find them annoying at one time or another and the fireants here are already getting busy and starting to drive me crazy.

Don't ask my why I (or the scientist who study ants) wonder about where they live. But somebody did try to find out about ant abodes. They poured plaster (and in a few cases molten aluminum) into ant holes to see just what the ant nest looked like and this is what they dug up:

Creepy, huh.

Now you know.

xoxoxo

we have house guests...
...so this is all you get today. :)

Is She Too Young?

I realize the video is awfully dark... and I appologize for that. But I had to sneak the shot from over her shoulder because she has this thing for the camera lately.

Do you think there's a budding knitter in my house?

Cape Fear Botanical Gardens

Happy Presidents' Day... or is it Happy Presidents Day? Does the day belong to "them," the presidents? or are we just celebrating many of them?

All neither here nor there since this post is actually about the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens, which we visited today.

It was a fun outing. We packed a picnic lunch and went to see just how the daffodils were doing. There's also a nice little 3/4 mile walk through the forest along the Cape Fear River. And a pond with geese!

Here, see how cute the girl thought she should be:

Cleaning Day

Hi All.

It was another clear day today but this time the wind is quite chilly. After church we made a quick trip to the commissary and then right back home. It's been a busy day of house cleaning as we get ready for company this week. A friend of Jacob's is deciding whether the army is a good fit for him and will be coming to visit and have a little look around... Jake's going to take him in to PT and work. ;)

My mom will be coming out to visit soon also. She arrives on the 8th to help out and partake in Lily's first birthday festivities on the fourteenth. Her actual birthday is on Thursday, March twelfth. Getting closer!

Happy Valentine's Day

I tried to get you a cute Valentine's Day picture.

Instead I got attacked! More accurately... the camera got attacked.

Praise!

It is a Glorious Day!

The sun is shinning and its not too warm, but nice enough to be out in just a t-shirt. There is a warm breeze that kicks up just when you wish there was a lovely breeze to cool your brow. Lily is a happy girl and her daddy is home on a four day weekend! Yay!

We just got back from a little trip out to Lowe's where I got supplies to start some seedlings for my herb garden this spring. There is something so good about growing things. Makes me feel happy inside. While we were there we found a blueberry bush that I think will be just perfect on the south side of our house! Something fun to grow in the full sun next to the herbs.

Little reminders of just how good God is and all his creations!

You Go, Salma!

Caution: This post is opinionated. And you might not share my opinion.

Have you heard about Salma Hayak recently? http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=6854285&page=1 Salma was in Africa to help the fight against tetanus. She was in a hospital and presented with a hungry child who she decided to feed. Now here's the part that has the world talking... she nursed him. Being a breastfeeding mother of a one year old little girl, she had plenty of milk and decided to make a statement about breastfeeding to the people of Sierra Leone, who are of the opinion that breastfeeding women should not be sexually active - thus many of their babies are weaned at just a few months old.

That's the part that is taboo in Sierra Leone. The part that is Taboo! here in America is that she cross-nursed... suckled someone else's child. But I say, "You go Salma!" If faced with an otherwise-healthy, hungry little one around Lil's age (milk composition changes over time) I'd do the same thing. I think people make way too much of it... "Ooo, cooties!" There is a chance of spreading infection, I admit. But I don't have tuberculosis, syphilis, hepatitis-associated antigen, cytomegalovirus, herpes virus, or HIV; and there are many healthy women out there like me. And I think much of the stigma that is attached to nursing in general, but someone else's child in particular is the adult eroticism associated with the breasts. Though most people have no argument against the benefits of human milk and have no issues with the outsourcing of breast-milk through milk-banks.

I do feel I should mention that even La Leche League has an official position against cross-nursing, due to concerns about passing viral pathogens. But there is a growing group of women who are even choosing to employ wet-nurses for both personal and medical reasons.

oops, I stepped away from the computer to run to the commissary and now that I'm off my soapbox I've lost my momentum and train of thought. So, rather than try and figure out where I left off... dare I ask.... What do you think?

Messing with Stuff

I've been messing with the blog layout today. Tweaking little things here and there. Learning a little bit more about how to write HTML. Not that I'll remember it in oh, say... a week. But it's been good for my brain, I'm sure... or something like that. I'm going to tell myself that to make myself feel better.

Oh and I couldn't take the hearts in the background anymore so they had to go.

In other news, Jake called to say he'll be coming in from the field tonight! Yay! But not until after Lele has already gone to bed. :( Oh well, can't have it all. We do have a four day weekend though starting on Friday. We're talking about driving out to Myrtle Beach if the weather stays nice....

A Year Ago Today

This is one of those days when I don't know what to post about. Lily's in bed. Jacob is in the field until late Thursday night. It's just me.

In case you hadn't noticed yet, I'm on day 41 of a crazy attempt at blog 365. There I said it, its out in the open.

So I decided to see what was in the photo archives.

A year ago today I was 35 weeks pregnant. I was staying with Mom and Dad. And Mom was getting the criblette ready for Lily. I should probably add that Gramma made the skirt, sheet, blanket and bumper. Here, have a peak at my munchkin's bed at Grammy's house:

My turn!

Okay! Okay, Sara! Just cause you know I have the day off of work today and can play around!

I guess, when I think about it there is alot to remember. Mostly, it was so much fun to be so young and in love with a family on the way. Our whole extended family was pretty excited about starting another generation!

1. WAS YOUR PREGNANCY PLANNED? HECK NO! I thought I would finish college first.

2. WERE YOU MARRIED AT THE TIME? Yes - 9 months.

3. WHAT WERE YOUR REACTIONS? Panic. I was afraid to tell Jim what I suspected.

4. WAS ABORTION AN OPTION FOR YOU? No.

5. HOW OLD WERE YOU? 23.

6. HOW DID YOU FIND OUT YOU WERE PREGNANT? Morning sickness and tender boobies made me suspect. I went to the Cal State campus clinic for confirming tests.

7. WHO DID YOU TELL FIRST? Jim, though I wasn't sure he'd be very happy. I needn't have worried. I could hear the big grin in his voice as he reassured me every thing would be alright. He knew something was bothering me and I finally told him IN THE DARK when we were in bed.

8. DID YOU WANT TO FIND OUT THE SEX? No.

9. DUE DATE? April 23rd.

10. DID YOU HAVE MORNING SICKNESS? Yes, we were on vacation driving and camping in the Southwest. That's how Jim knew something was wrong cause I couldn't handle any of the fast foods we were trying to eat on the road. And then it got ugly trying to go to class when I felt sick all day. The poor janitors who found the trash buckets in all the empty classrooms I ducked into to be sick!

11. WHAT DID YOU CRAVE? Ice Cream! Another cliche, I know.

12.WHAT IRRITATED YOU? Coffee. It made it easy to give it up!

14. DID YOU WISH YOU HAD THE OPPOSITE SEX OF WHAT YOU WERE GETTING? Not at all.

15. HOW MANY POUNDS DID YOU GAIN THROUGHOUT THE PREGNANCY? 35-40 pounds or so. It's hard to know cause both Jim and I had already been getting fat off of our own cooking after we got married!

16. DID YOU HAVE A BABY SHOWER? Yes, many. First grandbabies are spoiled on many fronts.

17. WAS IT A SURPRISE OR DID YOU KNOW? I knew.

18. DID YOU HAVE ANY COMPLICATIONS DURING YOUR PREGNANCY? Sara had shoulder dystocia(her shoulder got stuck behind the pubic bone). The Dr. had to help her out with a finger under the armpit to pull her out. She did have some temporary paralysis of her left arm and a greenstick fracture to her collarbone but everything turned out okay, wouldn't you agree?

19. WHERE DID YOU GIVE BIRTH? Glendale Adventist Medical Center, Glendale, CA.

20. WHO DROVE YOU TO THE HOSPITAL? Jim(Sara, you forgot to tell how Jacob got pulled over by the CHP for speeding you to the Hospital!)

21. WHO WATCHED YOU GIVE BIRTH? Jim, the doctor and the nurses.

22. WAS IT NATURAL OR C-SECTION? (um... what's your definition of natural?) vaginal with the doctors help(see #18)

First Born

Meme again. I've been tagged on facebook a few times with this one, and Beth did it on her blog. I challenge my mom to make up some answers... since she claims she can't remember.

Here you go Moms (and everyone else reading this) - a different kind of survey for a change - it's all about having your first born!

Happy Birthday!

It's my mom's birthday today. Happy Birthday Mom!

She celebrated with my dad, brother, sister and sister's husband last night. They all had a part in making her dinner. Mmmmm, ribs and beans and potato salad! And of course cake....

For a present this year, I sent my mom a set of measuring spoons. But not your regular 1/4tsp-1tbsp set. These are muffin measuring spoons, for the mini, regular and mega muffin pans. 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 cup measures.

Why? You might ask. I have a set, and I used to live with my mom, and when I moved away I took mine with me. This made her sad, so I got her her own set.

Love you Mom! Happy Birthday!

The one where I tell you much more than you want to know

Many of you know about my bra issues... because lets face it, my life is an open book and I have a really hard time keeping my mouth shut. If you think you should... you might want to stop reading here.

I've been on a quest of late, to find bras that fit properly since I am back to my pre pregnancy weight but still have nursing breasts. When I was nine months pregnant I was wearing a 36DD with no problems. I switched to nursing bras for a few weeks but found that they gave me very little support so I went back to my "normal" bras. Well as I lost the baby weight my ribcage became smaller but my breasts did not. I had one 34DD bra in my drawer (probably because bra sizes can sometimes be hard to find, and I had to have something) and that quickly became my favorite.

Recently, my 34 band has been riding up in the back and it feels like I am getting very little support. So I started looking into bra fitting... you know, how to measure for your size... and I found several different methods.

  1. There is the measure around your back above your breasts for you band size and then measure around the fullness of your bust and subtract the band number to determine your cup size, 1=A, 2=B, 3=C and so forth. (This would make me a 38B, which I can tell you right now is not even funny.)

  2. There is the measure around your rib cage just below your breast and add inches (varying from 3-6 depending on the site you are reading) to get your band size followed by the measure around the fullness of your bust and subtract the band number to determine your cup size. (That could give me a 34DD, which is what I am currently unhappy with.)

  3. There is the measure around your rib cage just below your breast to get your band size followed by the measure around the fullness of your bust and subtract the band number to determine your cup size. (Which gives me a 32H.)

Well, under normal circumstances one would go out and try these things on. But seeing as most stores don't carry (let alone think about) anything outside the 32-38 A-DD (SPECIAL NOTE: 32 band size only for A and sometimes B cups) range I was not going to be able to do that. I started looking for specialty shops but the closest ones are two and three hours away from here.

In my web-surfing I did find a shop in South Carolina with a website and an email fit consultant. I explained my situation to her and she recommended the 32H (well 32FF because its a British made bra) if I was going to continue nursing or the 32G (32F for all you Brits) if I thought I might be slowing or stopping soon.

Well folks, I bit the bullet and ordered the 32G. Partly because I just couldn't order a 32H, (but really what is the difference?!) and partly because I have "shallow" breasts. Don't ask... I heard it on Oprah.

...No really, you can ask... I'll explain if you really want to know.

Anywho, for those of you with quick mental math, be assured I have no intention of weaning Lily just yet. And yes, that is a whole other blog entry.

So the bra arrived today... and I love it!!!

There isn't much better than a great fitting bra! Well that's not true, there is chocolate... and potatoes... and other wonderful things. (Why are my wonderful things always food related?)

But I digress.

If you have any question in your mind at all about your current bra size, may I recommend fitting method number three? And if you're lucky enough to be able to go out to a store and try that baby on, I am so jealous!

Now for you curious folk... the before and after shots. Front and Side.

The one where Lily becomes an artist

Why did I never think of this before?

And here is the product... mind you, I did a few of the red scribbles on there to show her what the crayons would do.

Gum Friendly Foods

I have an almost 11 month old who prefers to feed herself. Trouble is she only has two teeth. :(

She'll eat just about anything we are eating, but will only take bites from our food for so long before she wants her own. And left to her own devices, she stuffs her mouth in .5 nanoseconds and then proceeds to choke. Gerber Graduate finger foods are wonderful, but how long can I feed my kid yogurt melts, puffs and cheerios? I'm afraid at the rate I feed her sweet potato "fries", she's going to end up hating sweet potato! Any ideas?

Or (am I a neat freak?) do I just give in and let every meal be a "messy" meal and let her feed herself pureed stuff?

HELP!!

I Need Your Help

Okay, so I've had a handfull of comments lately that I would love to reply back to. But I seem stumped for the proper protocol. On some sites I've seen reply comments right in the comment section, but I know some people never go back to read them and certainly don't check the little box to be emailed when other comments are made. Is it better, then, to go make a random comment on someone's blog? Assuming they have one. Email, perhaps?

What is the answer?

Health News

So far, there is no fever this morning! Yay! The last few mornings were the worst, and the fever would taper off during the day. But this morning she feels cool to the touch. Well, cooler; she's not like ice or anything. So Lily seems to be doing better. She's even napping sweetly right now.

Jacob on the other hand, called me from the health clinic yesterday at 4:50, needing a ride home because whatever they gave him in an IV made him sleepy. Why did he need an IV you ask? Because he woke up nauseated and couldn't keep anything down all day. Poor guy. Though it does irritate me that he doesn't know what they gave him... nor does he seem to care. We got him home and he went straight to bed and he didn't get up until 5:00 this morning; when he promptly decided to go right back to bed. I bundled Lil up and we just took him into work about an hour ago (since his car was still at work).

I am currently fine, thanks for asking :) Though I'm not holding my breath that I will stay that way....

Wanna See What I Made?

I am still a seven year old kid with the constant need for approval. Hey Ma, look what I can do!

I made this pretty purse for my friend Ruth, but I like it so much I am going to have to make one for myself. The "u" sides are reinforced with cardboard so it holds a nice shape, but I think I am going to try to reinforce the next one with heavy interfacing.

And this is a pattern I got from my friend Kelly. So, no Kel, that last hat you saw was just one of Beth's cute hats; this is the one from the spiral pattern. I'm working on a second one for Lil's friend Dawson, but in green.

:*(

I spoke too soon. We had a pretty good day, but after dinner the fever came back. Makes for a long night. I know a fever is the body's way of helping to fight off invaders, but at the same time I don't want my girl to be uncomfortable. So I fought with myself back and forth about giving her motrin to bring the fever down or just letting it do it's thing. Mostly I just wiped her down with a wet washcloth... which she HATED!

WebMD says the degree of the fever isn't as important as the other symptoms that accompany it. She is a little cranky when she is with me and just wants to cuddle when she is with Jacob. I guess I shouldn't be all that concerned; yet. WebMD also says "A fever in a healthy child is usually not dangerous, especially if the child does not have other symptoms and the fever goes away in 3 to 4 days." So now we play the waiting game.

I'll keep you posted.

Otherwise, enjoy the Superbowl... or the commercials... or both. ;)
